iTWire – Joomla 1.6 arrives

As an avid Joomla user I am very excited about iTWire news from today.

Version 1.6 of the Joomla CMS was released this week. Despite being a point release, it delivers a wide range of improvements.

Joomla is a popular open source content management system used by a variety of web sites including iTWire. Joomla 1.6 was released this week, delivering changes in many aspects of the software.

From a site designer’s perspective, significant new features include the ability to modify the appearance of specific pages by using template styles and template overrides, a colour-coded HTML and CSS editor. and nested categories.

Those responsible for content may be pleased to learn that the media manager now allows the upload of multiple files at once, even if the uploader is Flash based. (But is there now a rich text editor that works with Safari? That’s been one of the biggest frustrations here.)

Administrators may welcome the access control system, which allows unlimited groups, assigning one user to multiple groups, unlimited access levels, and access permissions applying at various levels from the entire site to an individual object. Also new is an option to manually approve all new registered users to keep the membership list clean.

The software runs on Linux, Windows and Mac OS X.

More than 100 Joomla add-ons have already been updated to work with version 1.6.
